Dim Sum

This traditional food can be found in almost all restaurants that serving Chinese food. Dim sum is usually served as breakfast and complimentary meals in tea. Dim sum is also served in small portions in a basket or small plate. There is a legend why this food has to be served in a small portion.

In the past, people who travel on the silk route often stop by to rest in the teahouse along the way. At first, tea is accompanied by heavy food but people begin to think that tea and heavy food is not worth, because it will make gain weight. Finally, the owners of the tea shop replace it with various snacks in small portions. Since then the tradition of dim sum began to widen.

Mooncake

Mooncake is an important meal at the Autumn Festival. It is intended for offerings as a tribute to the ancestors of the harvest time. History has a record that mooncake appears during the Song Dynasty (960 -1279).

Originally, the mooncakes have round shape filled with pasta and made from lotus seeds with a sweet taste. Because of the times, there are some variations of the shape and content of the mooncake. Its function has developed not only as an important meal at the Autumn Festival but also as a gift and snack.

Zongzi

Zongzi or commonly known as Ba Tzang is a traditional Chinese food made from glutinous rice and wrapped with bamboo leaves. Zongzi is usually served in the tradition of Duanwu celebration or Dragon Boat Festival.

This festival falls on the fifth month of the Lunar New Year to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a poet of the Chu royal era. In the beginning, the activity of making Zongzi with traditional recipes and art of wrapping it has been taught from generation to generation in a family. Now in a modern era, that tradition is very rare.

Marry Girl Cake is a traditional Chinese food that usually served during traditional Chinese wedding ceremonies. In this modern era, there are a lot of sponge cakes. So, marry girl cake is only known as a Chinese specialty cake and almost lost its initial function as a formal wedding dish.

This traditional Chinese cake made from almond paste and melon fruit that known as wife cake. According to legend, in the past, there lived a very poor couple who loved each other.  One day her father in law got severely ill. He does not get well even though the couple has spent all their money on medical expenses.

Secretly, the wife works as a slave to earn money to continue the treatment. When her husband knew what his wife was doing for his family, he tried to repay her sincerity by making a melon cake with a crunchy layer. Then, the cake became so popular that people wanted to buy it. Finally, they got a lot of money to treatment so his wife did not need to work as a slave.
