Indonesian Batik Culture Being World Heritage

Batik is truly Indonesian identic culture for a long time ago. Even Indonesian batik has become a world heritage. The United Nation Agency in the field of Education and Culture (UNESCO) had appointed Batik as one of human inheritance for oral and non-material culture since October 2nd, 2009.

Now, the product of Batik has been spreading all over the world. This is why countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and China now also produce a product called Batik to be their favorite product.

Indonesian Batik

Indonesian Batik permeates the lives of Indonesians from beginning to end with the techniques, symbolism, and culture on cotton and silk garments. Batik is one of the Indonesian cultures which have admitted to all over the world.

Being one of the best cultural heritages, Batik day will celebrate on second October every year in Indonesia. It is a special day that stated based on the fifth president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Batik clothes design is worn regularly in business and academic settings. Meanwhile for the special varieties, batik are incorporated into celebrations of marriage, pregnancy, into the puppet theatre, and other art forms. Batik is dyed by craftspeople that draw designs on fabric using dots and lines of hot wax.

The artisans are coloring the cloth selectively by soaking it in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and then repeating if multiple colors are desired. The patterns of batik reflect from the variety of influences such as from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets, Chinese phoenixes, Japanese cherry blossoms, and Indian or Persian peacocks.

The Batik from Indonesia is also often handed down within families for generations. The craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people through the symbolic meanings of its colors and designs express their creativity and spirituality.

The entry of batik as a world heritage by UNESCO is expected to motivate and raise the dignity of batik artisans. Not only that, it is also expected to support efforts to improve the welfare of society.
